Korean shaved ice

A huge bowl of Korean shaved ice topped with kinako (roasted soy bean flour), mochi, and almonds. Shaved ice is super fine and slightly sweet. Delicious! – Kawasaki, Japan

Taiyaki

It’s kind of like a waffle with sweet or savory filling, and it’s fish shaped (don’t ask me why, I have no idea). The most traditional filling is sweetened adzuki beans which is also my favorite kind – Kawasaki, Japan

Kitakata Ramen

Originated in Kitakata City (which is my mom’s home town), I grew up eating this type of ramen before it became popular in Japan. Now I can find a Kitakata ramen shop in Kawasaki City! Thick wavy noodles in simple yet flavorful soy based broth are usually topped with multiple slices of chashu (braised pork), shinachiku (fermented bamboo shoots) and green onions. Ultimate comfort food! – Kawasaki, Japan
